Crowdfunding aims to prove that solar power is a bankable sector

Last year, $244bn (£149bn) poured into global renewable investments. But only a tiny amount of that trickled down to where it is needed the most – to provide power to the two billion people without access to energy. The UN's goal of universal access to modern energy by 2030 will require an annual investment of up to $41bn a year. Progress to date has been slow, to say the least.

Four years after its first workshop held in Bonn, 2009, which led to the publication “The Role of Ecosystems in Disaster Risk Reduction” (2013), the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), the Centre for Natural Resources and Development (CNRD) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) is inviting researchers, policy makers and practitioners to a Science-Policy workshop to share success stories and discuss how the science and evidence-base of ecosystem-based DRR/CCA could more effectively inform and influence development decisions.

The cost of climate change in the Pacific

ADB’s new ‘The Economics of Climate Change in the Pacific’ report estimates the range of potential economic impacts of climate change for specific sectors and economies of the region under various emissions scenarios. The study covers all of ADB’s Pacific developing member countries, but specific results are presented in the study for Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu.

Study says another greenhouse gas is far more dangerous than CO2

Scientists in Canada say they have found that a seldom-mentioned greenhouse gas, which has been present in the atmosphere for decades, has far more potential than CO2 to warm the Earth.

The substance – called perfluorotributylamine, or PFTBA – "is the most radiatively efficient chemical found to date, breaking all other chemical records for its potential to impact climate," scientists at the University of Toronto said in a news release about their recent study.

UNIDO and Austria pave the way for a global network of regional sustainable energy centres

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the operational unit of the Austrian Development Cooperation, today signed agreements to support an existing renewable energy and energy efficiency centre in West Africa and to set up three more centres in East and Southern African and in the Caribbean region. The four project agreements will receive a total of approximately EUR 3.5 million in funding from the ADA.

El Gobierno y la comunidad indígena de Panamá han llegado a un acuerdo para retomar un programa de la ONU contra el cambio climático y la deforestación, paralizado desde marzo por las denuncias de grupos indígenas, ya que, según ellos, no se les había tenido en cuenta en su creación.
